In response to the critical and emerging role of the advanced practice nurse as a provider of consultation and specialized continence care to residents in long term care (LTC), SUNA convened a task force to define the scope and standards of practice of the advanced practice continence nurse (APCN), in LTC settings. SUNA adopted the framework of the American Nurses Association's Nursing: Scope and Standards of Practice, 4th Ed. (2004) to define the scope and standards of practice of the APCN. These recommendations also take into consideration the continence guidelines developed by professional organizations including the International Continence Society, the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, the American Medical Directors Association, and the American Geriatrics Society, as well as researchers who contribute to evidence-based clinical practice specific to the LTC population and settings.
